Advanced Options

Bookmarking is made easy with the Diigo extension! To bookmark a page, simply open the Diigo menu, and click save. A box will appear asking you to put in different information to help you organize your bookmark more efficiently. Options include:

Bookmark Title: At the top of the options box you can enter in your own title for the webpage which can help you find your bookmarks more easily within your library.

Public /Private: You can make your bookmarks public or private. The checkbox just under the title can be ticked to make your bookmark private which means you don’t have to share your interests within the network.

Read Later: You might not have enough time to read a really interesting article that you found at work, perhaps you might forget the website that you had stopped reading in your bookmarks. Checking read later on the options box can allow you to read your interesting webpages, which flags up in your library as not read as an extra reminder.

Cache:  This useful tool can help save a page which changes frequently such as blogs or social media pages. You can now cache your pages so that the information will never be lost! (Premium feature only)

Description: Add a description for a quick reminder on why you bookmarked it. It’s also great for other users when sharing the content so they can understand briefly what the page is about.

Tags: One of the best way to organize and filter your items is through tagging. You can categorize your interests so that others can link with you in similar interests. You can type in your own tags or click on the suggested tags in the box. Tags that you have used recently will appear just under the tag entry box. This is useful when building a specific collection because it is easy to tag the items you’re collecting with matching labels. Recommended tags will display words that are often repeated in the webpage you are bookmarking.

Share to a group: You can also share your bookmark to one of the groups that you are a member of. Click on the share to a group bar and a copy will be shared.

Edit URL: Clicking on the chain link icon in the title box means that you can edit the URL itself

Highlighting

A great addition to the Diigo extension bar is the highlighter feature, where you can highlight words, phrases and paragraphs directly from any webpage. By selecting annotate from the drop down list your cursor will now become a highlighter pen and you’re ready to go! You can also choose different colors by clicking the downwards arrow next to the highlighter icon.

Deleting a highlight can be made by clicking the trashcan icon on the extension bar, and to finish highlighting simply click the highlighter pen icon to return to your normal cursor.

You can annotate your highlighter text also by clicking on the speech bubble in the extension bar to produce sticky notes, if needing to add extra information or your thoughts.

Sticky Notes

There are two different types of sticky notes in which you can use. These include the floating or anchored note.

Floating notes: are useful for comments generally related to a page. These type of notes can be moved around freely on the page by clicking and dragging the note, just type into the note box your thoughts and interests and click save and your note will be saved.

Anchored notes: are for commenting on specific highlighted text. (More information on anchored sticky notes)

Sticky notes can also change colour. Click the little square in the top left hand side of the note to change the colour. Deleting is made easy too, at the bottom left corner of the note a trash can icon will appear once you have posted your note, the note can now be removed.

Thoughts can be shared in groups by sticky notes on a webpage. Click the plus icon next to the square in the top right hand to add a group and share your thoughts together!

Read Later

If you don’t have enough time to read a webpage you can save it for later. By checking the read later option, your webpage will be marked as unread in your library. You can also click the read later icon straight from the Diigo extension.

Collect and Capture Images

You can easily save images and annotate them through Diigo. Simply right click onto an image that you wish to save and the drop down menu will contain the Diigo icon. From there you can save the selected image to your Diigo library. There are two options in which you can choose from to save an image to Diigo: attach the URL with the image or just the image itself. If you attach the URL with the image the webpage will also show up with the image in your library compared to just saving the image on its own.

An additional feature in the capture image setting is that you can annotate a section of the webpage, to perhaps explain a section of a picture or explain your thoughts. Choose the screenshot button from the Diigo extension bar, click and drag to elect the area of the page and the capture toolbar will appear at the bottom. There are a variety of options you can choose from here which include choosing text or a shape to annotate your selected area. You can also undo mistakes and save with the floppy disk icon.
