There are 3 kinds of Comment Options in Diigo:

(1) Inline Comment ("In-situ Sticky Note")

Sticky note that's associated with a highlight

Inline Comment is a useful kind of digital sticky note.  Since the associated highlight and sticky note are persistent and very targeted,  they allow you to jot down your comments directly on any part of a webpage and scan through all your research findings quickly. Public sticky notes allow you to exchange viewpoints on any specific area of a webpage. It is great for collaboration or fine-grained debate on specific point on a webpage!

To add an "Inline Comment"

  • Highlight a block of text first
  • Right-click within the highlighted area, and select "Add inline comment":

    ./Add inline comment1.jpg

  • Add your comment and press "Ok"      - that's it!
./Add inline comment2.jpg A- privacy / group sharing option
B - text input area
C - Add additional comment  / Delete Icons
To view, mouse-over the highlight and the sticky note will show up in a pop-up window,
Or,  open up the sidebar, This URL » Annotations tab to view all annotations for this page at a glance!

(2) Sticky Note For The Page ("Floating Sticky Note")

Sticky note that can be freely positioned in any part of a webpage

Previously, a sticky note has to be tied to a highlight. Now you can also add a "floating" sticky note that doesn't have to be associated with any highlight! Hey, you can also move it around and positioned it anywhere you wish on a webpage!

To add a "Sticky Note For the Page"
(1) Select "Comment » "Add a sticky note to this page"  icon on the new toolbar:

./add sticky note page.jpg

(2) Start adding your note, and click "Ok" to save.
(3) To view this sticky note (shown by the "yellow bubble"), mouse-over the yellow bubble, and the note window will pop-up.
Or,  open up the sidebar, This URL » Annotations tab to view all annotations for this page at a glance!

Tips:

  • This sticky note can be dragged around with your mouse and positioned it anywhere you wish on a webpage!
  • Number within the "yellow bubble"  indicates number of comments.

(3) Page Comment

Not a sticky note that resides on top of a webpage, but a page comment under a bookmark

Sometimes you may wish to add a general note about a bookmark (public or private), or discuss with others about a webpage in a forum-like discussion.

To add a "Page Comment"

Simply click "Comment" icon on toolbar, sidebar will expand to allow you to add note:

./page comment.jpg

Page comments can be viewed in your My Bookmarks » "Expanded",  or via the sidebar Annotations view:

./sidebar annotaions.jpg

Private vs. Public

  • Sticky notes are either PRIVATE (default), PUBLIC, or GROUP. Private sticky notes are viewable by the author and any forwarded recipients.
  • Public sticky notes can be seen on the page by all Diigo members with the Diigo toolbar or Diigolet installed, and its viewing mode set to "All".
  • The highlights associated with public sticky notes also become PUBLIC, i.e., viewable to all Diigo members.
  • Public highlights and sticky notes should be done with care. To minimize graffiti and spam, we have raised the bar for making public highlights and sticky notes:
  • you need at least two friends in the Diigo community to do so.
