Highlighting Basics & Video Tour

How to add highlight: Watch a short video

Diigo highlights can be used to mark important information on a webpage, just like you'd on paper. Highlighted text or pictures are also automatically "clipped" to the "My Bookmarks" section.

With Diigo highlighting and clipping:

  • important information can be highlighted on webpages for easy scanning later.
  • snippets of information can be clipped and aggregated, for sharing, editing or easy search and reference later.
  • you can easily direct others’ attention to the most pertinent information on that page.

To add highlight to any part of the webpage, follow two simple steps:

./highlight text1.jpg
  1. Select a block of text first
  2. Click the Highlight button on toolbar, or right-click and hit "Highlight Selected Text"

That's it. That block of text should be highlighted on this webpage and also "clipped" into your "My Bookmarks"

To remove a highlight: right-click within the highlighted area, and hit "DELETE":

./highlight text2.jpg

Highlighting & Clipping: Image and Video/Flash

Besides highlighting text on webpages, you can also highlight and clip image & video / flash.

To highlight an image

./highlight pciture.jpg

  1. Use your mouse to select the image first. Right-click and hit "Highlight this Image".
  2. On the webpage, you will see a yellow border around the highlighted image to indicate the image was successfully highlighted on this page. The image is also clipped to "My Bookmarks"

To highlight & Clip Video / Flash Media

./highlight video.jpg

Diigo now supports clipping and playing your favorite videos & flashes! To bookmark, highlight and clip a video, select Bookmark » "Collect Media" on the toolbar. Click the "Collect" link on the upper right-hand corner of the video to save to Diigo. Once saved successfully, the link will indicate "Collected".

Go to "My Bookmarks" » Expand, the clipped video can be played right there!
Currently we support video hosted by these sites:

youtube.com, myspace.com, video.google.com, video.yahoo.com, atomfilms.com, bolt.com, break.com , dailymotion.com, ifilm.com, metacafe.com , myspace.com, podtech.net , stupidvideos.com, uncutvideo.aol.com , vimeo.com, youku.com

Highlighting Styles

In the toolbar Options » Bookmark and Highlight panel, you can choose 3 different types of highlighting style:

./highlight options.jpg
  • Background Color Change: the entire highlighted area will change its background color to yellow (just like marking the webpage with a yellow highlighter)
  • Underline: highlights are indicated by a dotted underline
  • Underline + Font Color Change: highlighted text will change their font color plus a dotted underline.

Here is a sample screenshot for the default Background Color Change:

./color highlight.jpg

Aggregate Clippings - Extract Highlights & Annotations

Suppose you are doing research for school work, or for shopping a camera, or for planning a vacation, and you have highlighted key snippets of information across many web pages, Diigo allows you to collect those key pieces of information together quite easily.

First, go to My Bookmarks on the Diigo website, and check the bookmarks from which you want to aggregate clippings, and then select "EXTRACT ANNOTATIONS" from the "More Actions" pull-down menu. The clippings will be arranged in bullet points, perfect for printing or saving as an html document.
