Groups Basics & Video Tour

Diigo Groups: Watch a short video

  • Diigo Groups provides a ground-breaking collaborative research and learning tool that allows any group of people to pool their findings through group bookmarks, highlights, sticky notes, and forum.
  • A Diigo group is especially useful for sharing resources and conducting discussions for specific purposes or interests. A group can be private, semi-private or public. Create a group for your team at work, for your class or club, or find others who share specific interests!

Create A Group

(A) Set up your own group

Under Communities » Groups, or Home » My Groups, click "Create A Group" button:

./create.jpg Tips:
  • Pick a good name for your group

  • Proper Keywords and Category will help others to easily discover your pubic group

  • Choose your group URL carefully - this is the only field that cannot be edited later

  • Explore several privacy and membership admission control options available. Should you change your mind on any of these settings, edit under "Manage Group"

(B) Invite people to join group

During the Step 2 of creating a new group, simply enter your friends' email, or you can choose from your diigo Address Book (see Friends section for more details), or Import Email from external address book source. Check off the invitees and click "Invite" to send.

./create2.jpg

Or, once you've finished creating a group, you can also easily invite others to your group by going to Home » My Groups;
In each group, select "Invite Others":

./invite.jpg

Add Group Bookmarks

To Add Bookmarks to your Group:

(A)Via toolbar:

./new group.jpg

(B) Via "My Bookmarks" » "Share-to-Group" pull down:

./my bookmark share group.jpg

Tips:

  • You can do a subject / tag search first. Identify those bookmarks that you're interested to share, and put a check box in front.
  • Use the Share-to-Group pull down, select the right group and hit return. That's it for batch-sharing!
  • When you have a bookmark and share it to a group, what happen is that there is now a copy in "My Bookmarks" and a copy in "Group Bookmarks".
  • Since they are not the same data record, you can delete or edit either one without impacting the other.

View Group Bookmarks

Group bookmarks work mostly the same way as "My Bookmarks", except different filter views and edit right

(Tip: members can remove their own bookmark if there is no follow-up comments; only the group admin / moderators have the full editing right.)
Group bookmarks are sorted by:
  1. Time Created
  2. New Comments
  3. Thumb Ups - # of favorite votes by group members

Other important group bookmarks features:

  • Full-text search available. Of course, private group’s info can only be viewed by its group members.
  • RSS feed and WebSlide Playbutton for the group bookmarks
  • Group Stats / easy links & Top Group Bookmarks Contributors are listed.

View / Add Group Annotations

(A) Within the Group View

As you browse through your group » Group Bookmarks in expanded view, you can easily interact with other group members by adding your page comment or append additional comment to the group sticky notes:

./comment.jpg

(B) Within Annotated Page View

As you browse through any group annotated webpage, not only you can see all the group highlights / sticky notes superimposed right on the original page, by mousing-over the highlight or floating note, you can also add and follow-up with additional comment. It’s like carrying on a threaded discussion with other group members right on the page!

In addition, if you open up the sidebar, This URL » Annotations tab, and use See » select Group view filter, you can also see all annotations by the group at a glance and directly add your comment there as well. Click the highlight in sidebar will lead you directly to the original page in-situ sticky note.

Group Forum

Each group can host its own group forum. This allows your group members to initiate and carry on discussions on subjects of interest that may not be appropriate as notes on a single resource. Diigo Group Forums is quite unique in its design, just like all of our features :-)

There are 2 modes of structuring your Group Forum:

./from.jpg

(1) Traditional “Category” method: the Group Manager may decide to organize forum posts according to pre-defined categories, or

(2)"Tagging" method: this mode allows group members to tag each of their own posts as they see fit. The latter method, while potentially less tightly organized, harnesses the power of tagging in a forum setting.

Group Manager can enable the group forums by clicking “Manage Forum” and selecting your group setting preference.

Group Forum Display & Search:
There are several group forum enhancements in V3:

./Group Forum.jpg

(1) For each discussion thread, besides the Author name, there is a summary of posts count, total view count, and who added the last voice.

(2) You can now search among Group Forum Topics

(3) See Top Group Posts Contributors

(4) Click each user pulls up all his/ her Group Posts

Monitor Group Activities

RSS Feeds: Feeds available for private / public group bookmarks, group tag(s), and forum posts

Group Digest Email Alert:

./alert.jpg

Each group member can receive a timely Group Digest Email Alert that summarizes the new additions to your group and delivered to your email according to your preference.

This is in addition to the RSS feeds support for group bookmarks and group forums, and email monitor for any particular forum thread that you are interested in following. So depending on how you like info delivered to you, you can easily stay on top of your group activities.

Manage Group

For group member

  • Subscription to group email alert: see Monitor Group Activities

  • Group Widget: codes to display your group in your blog/ site

./widget.jpg

For group owner

There are many options and controls to manage your Diigo group.

  • Group Overview: Edit all group description, group avatar, and privacy / membership / alert setting.
    ./overview.jpg
  • Manage Members: You can grant any number of members as a moderator with editing right, ban any member, or restore their membership.

If you set the group that requires members to apply for membership first, then review any pending requests at "Pending Members" tab

    ./menbers.jpg

Note: Through Group » Members, you can also get a good overview of group members' activities sorted by activity, bookmarks / posts count, join date & alphabetical listing:

    ./members.jpg

  • Manage Forum: see Group Forum for more details
  • Group Tag Dictionary: see Group Tag Dictionary for more details.

Group Tag Dictionary

An innovative powerful feature: It allows a group manager to pre-define a set of groups tags as "recommended group tags" to improve group tagging consistency, or as a form of scaffolding to provide models of tags. These "recommended group tags" will automatically show up each time this group is selected in the bookmarking window:

./tags.jpg

Many possible use scenarios. For example, perfect for teachers to guide students for a more structured group bookmarking activities.

Note: special credit to Steve Hargadon of Classroom2.0 for making this feature request!

Explore & Join A Group

Explore groups

  • Browse through public groups by category: “Browse by Group Category” in View Groups
  • Full text search support to search a group: “Find / Join a group” search box in View Groups
(note: private group owner has the option to allow his/her group to be searchable. Of course, even if the private group is shown in the search result, the group access will be restricted according to the membership requirement set by the group owner.)
  • Find “Related Groups” by your or community tags:

As you pull up any tag-specific result within Diigo, we will dynamically analyze the content and randomly show some “Related Groups” based on those public groups’ expressed interest. Nice way to explore interesting public groups!

    ./related.jpg

Join A Group

  • When you see a public group that you’re interested, simply click “Join Group”.

Depending on the group setting, you will either be automatically joined as a new group member, or your Join Group request will be pending and await for the group owner’s review and approval.

  • To join a private group, you will receive an email invitation or you can also check your Dashboard for any group invite status.
