Bookmarking Basics & Video Tour

Bookmarking is quite simple with Diigo. How to add bookmarks:  Watch a short video

To get started:

Install the Diigo Toolbar or add the Diigolet to your browser.

./bookmarks new.jpg

Bookmarking Options

./bookmark window copy.jpg

(1) Public vs. Private: Choose the privacy setting for this bookmark (unchecked = public)

(Tip: This can be changed by re-bookmarking the same page, or editing it in "My Bookmarks". You can also set the default privacy setting inthe toolbar, using Diigo » Options.)

(2) Unread: Check this box to mark a page for later reading.

Tip: Find unread pages easily by clicking the "Unread" tab in "My Bookmarks". Once you click a link,  its Unread status will automatically be converted to Read.

If you want to change a page from "Read" to "Unread",  use the More Actions » pull-down menu and select either "Mark as read/unread". You can also select multiple bookmarks to edit this marker at one time.

./unread.jpg

(3)Twitter This!: Check this, and this web page will be both saved to your Diigo account and sent as a twitter message!

The URL of that web page will automatically be sent as a TinyURL.  Twitter will prompt you to enter your Twitter ID & password once each browser session.

Great way to share your discovery with your Twitter followers!

(4)Description: Add a memo about the website into the pop-up window.

Tip:  Another quick way to add a description to a bookmark is to select a block of text with your mouse first (without having it highlighted), then click "Bookmark".  That block of text that you just selected will automatically be captuired into the description field in bookmarking window.

(5)Recommended Tags: We'll automatically analyze the page content and recommend suitable tags for you. Just point and click, and/or enter your own descriptive tags, separated by space.

(6)Share to List, Friends, Group: When you have set these up,  they will then show up to allow you to easily share this bookmark to a list, friends (individually, or Contact List that you have created), or a group.

Simultaneous Bookmarking Elsewhere

If you've used other web-based bookmarking services before, you may still wish to keep adding your bookmarks to those as well. With Diigo, we make this very easy for you, So you can now take full advantage of Diigo's power without giving up your old services. To simplify the workflow and support effort, we now offer only the online bookmarking services with API  and your local browser folder (see below). Go to toolbar Diigo »Options » Bookmark & Highlight tab » Bookmark Elsewhere section, click "Setup Accounts" link.  Set up the services you want to simultaneously add your bookmarks to, and  Diigo will take care of the rest.

./Simultaneous Bookmarking .jpg

Rapid Bookmarking:  One-Click Save

This icon now serves two purposes:

  1. Rapid Bookmarking

It now replaces the QuickD in the previous version.  Clicking "One-Click Save" button while visiting a website will automatically save the bookmark to your "My Bookmarks" section without the usual Bookmark pop-up window. The default tag is currently set as "no-tag", (which can be easily pulled up in "My Bookmarks" » "Untagged" tab for future editing),  or, can be changed  by setting it under the Bookmark »  "Set  Default Tag"
    ./Rapid Bookmarking.jpg
  2. Bookmarking Icon Status

If the webpage has already been bookmarked by yourself, a red bookmark will appear.

    ./read bookmark.jpg

(note: any annotation changes will now be reflected on the "Comment" icon as well as on the new sidebar.)

Import & Export Bookmarks:

Import Local Bookmarks

Once the Diigo toolbar is installed, importing bookmarks you have already saved in your browser takes just one-click!

Go to Toolbar, Diigo » "Import My Bookmarks", a window will appear with a list of all of the Favorites from your local computer:

./import1.jpg

Tips:

  1. To set the privacy settings of imported bookmarks, first, "Mark All setting As" of all imported bookmarks either public or private. And then, privacy settings, tags, and title can be further changed individually in the import window before importing, or in batch on the website after importing.
  2. Folder and sub-folder names are converted to tags. For example, a bookmark under folder "TECHNOLOGY NEWS and subfolder INTERNET, will have two tags: "TECHNOLOGY NEWS" and INTERNET.
  3. Newly imported bookmarks will overwrite the bookmarks already in the Diigo database that have identical URLs. So if you have imported some bookmarks and made revisions to these bookmarks, either in tags or titles, you will lose those revisions if you import the same set of bookmarks again.

Import Online Bookmarks

To import your bookmarks from sevral web-based bookmarking services, go to username » Tools » Import Bookmarks,  pick a site where you wish to import your bookmarks from, your will be prompted to enter your username and password. You can choose between importing them as public or private. You can of course change these settings later on in your "My Bookmarks" section.

./import2.jpg

To import from other web-based bookmarking services that we currently don't support, you can first export your bookmarks from other service into your local browser first, then use our "Import My Bookmarks" toolbar function.
